Effect of Paclobutrazol on Vegetative Growth , Fruit Quality , and Nutrition Physiology in Young ¢¥ Tsugaru ¢¥ Apple (Malus domestica Borkh .) Trees

Abstract
This study was conducted to investigate the effect of paclobutrazol on tree growth, fruit quality, carbohydrate and mineral nutrition in `Tsugaru¢¥ apple trees on M.26 rootstock, planted in 1982. One or two grams of paclobutrazol per tree were applied by soil drench and foliar spray in the spring of 1984, and 75% of the concentrations on the same tree in 1985.
Paclobutrazol reduced shoot length and number of leaves per shoot, but it was not effective for the increase of trunk circumference, leaf area, and leaf fresh weight. Yield increased with increase of flower number and fruit set in the current year, but decreased in the following year due to the alternate bearing. Fruit stalk length was shortened and shape index (L/D ratio) was decreased. Paclobutrazol delayed fruit coloration and reduced soluble solids. However, fruit firmness and total acidity were not affected. Paclobutrazol did not change the contents of carbohydrate arid total nitrogen of dormant flower bud and developing floral organ in spring. Paclobutrazol increased the content of carbohydrate in the stems, but not in the leaves in late June. The contents of N, K, Ca, and Mg in the leaves were not changed but P was decreased by paclobutrazol application. The contents of N in both fruit flesh and peel were significantly increased by paclobutrazol application and Ca and Mg were increased only in the peel.
